SAP
A total of over 3340 small farmers (about 23 000 total beneficiaries) have been impacted since the Programme began in 1999. These include :
Keen farmers who are willing to train other farmers and use their land as role models for sustainable agriculture.
Active Farmers who use sustainable agriculture practices but are also involved in some non-farming activities.
Target Group Farmers who are assisted by Keen Farmers.
and Small Farmers who merely received exposure to sustainable agriculture.
EDP
EDP works with "Groups of 5's" (entrepreneurial groups of 5 people) involving over 2935 entrepreneurs selected by the community as being poor.
Two members from each of the new G5's formed each year attend Orientation Training at the ACAT Centre at Lidgetton which involves training in business skills, capacity building, HIV/Aids and the causes of poverty.
All entrepreneurs are encouraged to start a small, four-door size vegetable producing garden near their home.
Loans are given out to G5 entrepreneurs to enable them to start their own businesses - hairdressing, tuck-shops, hawking, upholstery, welding, shoe/sales, handcraft, poultry, sewing, and small farming are popular choices.
The credit control of outstanding accounts has been good with a repayment rate of over 80%.
ABET
The ACAT ABET programme has developed training modules for Grades 1 to Grades 9 (Levels 1 4) in the learning areas of Language and Communication, Numeracy and Functional Mathematics, Applied Agriculture, Agricultural Technology, Food and Textile Technology and Management and Entrepreneurship. All the modules for Levels 1 4 (94 modules) are now available in English and Zulu. ACAT encourages "life long learning" and as such has also developed non-formal skills modules designed to assist learners "learn while they earn". Examples of these modules include vegetable production, blockmaking, etc. An estimated 10000 learners have used ACAT's ABET modules.
